The Cal Football Digital Archive, based on the University Archives' collection of historic footage (film, tape and digital formats), includes more than 600 games dating from 1929 to the present era. The footage came to the archives as gifts from alumni and friends and transfers from storage in Edwards Stadium.

The purpose of the current project is to create a prototype website on a library server for demonstration and fund-raising purposes. The website accesses footage of selected games converted to digital format and is available for public viewing and downloading. The project is supported by the University Libraries and Cal Football, alumni, and staff.

The University Archives needs your support to preserve and provide access to these films. By digitizing and properly storing these films in the archives, they will be available to future generations of Cal Bears and friends for generations to come.

Technical Information

Selecting the Source Materials: Materials for the prototype website include eleven games selected from the collections of Dick Melbye and the University Archives. The films were selected for their historic interest, as well as games whose footage had been converted to digital format for purposes of preservation. The films were converted by Patson's Media Group to digital formats: Master files were encoded to ProRes422; streaming files were encoded as H.264/MPEG-4 for online access.

Funding the Project

Cal Football and the University Libraries provided technical support, digital curation, and other resources to create the prototype website and digital archives. Converting and mounting the entire collection of archival footage, including footage belonging to private individuals, will be funded by gifts and contributions from alumni and friends of the Cal Football Digital Archive.

Staff Credits

The Cal Football Digital Archive was conceived by David Farrell, University Archivist, and Dick Melbye, Class of 55 and member of the Grid Club. The project began with the conversion of damaged historic film (funding provided by Mr. Melbye) to digital format to preserve it and make it accessible. In the current phase, support for planning the project, providing resources and professional expertise, and preparing the prototype website has been provided by Mary Elings, David de Lorenzo, David Farrell, Lorna Kirwan, and Josh Schneider (The Bancroft Library); Lynne Grigsby (Library Systems Office), and Matt Fox (Cal Football).
